Halloween Storage Organization: Don’t Just Store It. Edit It.

A practical guide to keeping your Halloween costumes, decorations and accessories organized and under control.

A group of Halloween decorations that will need to be organized and stored.

Halloween decorations, costumes and all the little extras that come with them have a way of multiplying.

This year  you’re  buying  a new costume. The next year you add a few decorations. And, we can’t forget about all the accessories, the makeup, the props…

Next thing you know,  you have a bin (or three, or in our case 6) stored in the basement that you haven’t really used in years.

Before you start buying more bins to organize, I always recommend starting with one simple question:

Are you actually still going to use it again?

Start With What You Already Have

If you have a bin full of costumes and Halloween clothing, take a look at what’s actually inside.

When was the last time you wore these?

Are any of you still using them?

Do they still fit?

Sometimes we keep things simply because we have them. But if a costume hasn’t been worn in years and no one has plans to use it again, it may be time to pass it along.

This doesn’t mean you have to get rid of everything. Some items are absolutely worth keeping, for me it’s all my 80’s - 90’s wear, I don’t use it all the time, but I will again!

The goal is simply to make sure what you are storing still deserves the space it takes up.

Halloween Storage Organization Starts With Your Space

Before you decide how much Halloween stuff you can keep, take a realistic look at the space you have available.

Do you have one shelf?

A section of your storage room?

A couple of bins?

Whatever your space allows, let your available storage help determine your limit.

Don’t create more space just to accommodate more stuff.

If your collection is overflowing its designated area, that's a good sign that it may be time to edit it down.

Store by Category

Once you've decided what is staying, make it easy to find next year.

I recommend keeping similar things together rather than putting everything ‘Halloween’ into one giant bin.

For example:

  • Accessories – hats, masks, wigs, jewelry and small accessories

  • Clothing – costumes, capes, robes and other wearable pieces

  • Makeup – face paint, special-effects makeup and applicators

  • Props – decorations, signs, tombstones and other larger items

You can take this even further depending on how much you have.

The idea behind good Halloween storage organization is simple: when you need something, you should be able to find it without digging through every Halloween bin you own.

And don't forget to label!

A label that says Halloween is helpful.

A label that says Halloween – Costumes & Clothing is even better.

Make Editing Part of Putting it Away

One of the easiest ways to keep seasonal storage under control is to edit it every year.

When Halloween is over and you're putting everything away, take a few minutes to look at what you actually used.

Did something sit untouched for many seasons?

Did a costume get outgrown?

Did you pull something out and realize you don't really like it anymore?

That's your opportunity to let it go while you're already in Halloween mode.

A little editing every year keeps your collection current, contained and much easier to manage.

The Goal Isn't Perfect Storage

You don't need a Pinterest-worthy storage room filled with matching bins and perfectly folded costumes.

You need a system that works for your home and your real life.

Keep what you use. Keep what you love. Store it in a way that makes sense. And let go of what no longer has a place in your life.

Because when Halloween rolls around next year, the goal isn't “Where did I put that?”

It's to open the right bin and find exactly what you're looking for.

That's what living clear is all about.
